The Limfjord´s thousands of years old protection against the North Sea, the tongue of land Agger Tange, has been formed by the great migration of sand from the North Sea itself. The area reaches from the highlands at Bovbjerg in the south and Lodbjerg in the North. This natural state has probably existed until the storm flood in 1825, apart from shorter and unstable breakthroughs. The storm broke through the tongue of land shaping Agger Channel, which was followed by Thyborøn Channel under a new storm flood in 1862. Since then this channel has been the Limfjord´s gate to the west, and it divides the tongue into two “peninsulas”: Harboøre Tange in the south and Agger Tange in the north.

When the flood had created the link between sea and fjord, the land behind the channel collected the sand masses, that were carried by the wind and current from the North Sea, into the fjord. Here the sand was settled on the tongue´s leeward side as large sand banks that gradually grew and created the basis of a new salty water nature landscape of constantly alternating current grooves.
The Ferry
The traffic between Thyborøn and Agger Tange is taken care of by a ferry connection across the channel, driven by Lemvig Municipality. The ferry is an indispensible life nerve between north and south.

Migratory Birds – in springtime and autumn
The resting water birds are especially connected to lagoons, flooded meadows and shallow areas in Nissum Bredning. The species appearing in greatest numbers are mallard, teal, widgeon and, especially in autumn pochard and goldeneye. Furthermore flocks of coot, mute swan, whooper swan and Bewick´s swan are resting here. In the springtime Harboøre Tange is an important resting place for pink-footed goose, an arctic breeding goose who is only seen in West Jutland. The area Plet Enge and meadows south of Harboøre are also important resting places for the pink-footed goose during spring time.
Following resting wading birds are present in the area: Golden plover, lapwing, common sandpiper, curlew and common snipe.
Bird life during breeding time
The rules for traffic at the tongues of land are especially made to give peace to the birds during breeding time. The best breeding areas are on damp meadows and in reed forests. Here the most characteristic species are: Mute svan, common shelduck, mallard, northern pintail and coot. Wading birds like oystercatcher, avocet, redshank, ruff and black-tailed godwit are the most common species.
At the Agger Tange is a large colony of black-headed gulls plus a minor population of common gull and arctic tern.
Seals
When you sail the ferry from Thyborøn to Agger Tange, you will often have the possibility of watching the common seal. The seals are living on sand banks and reefs in Nissum Bredning, and the total population in some seasons is more than 100 animals. The seals are in several areas in the Limfjord, and in breeding time they are staying on remote lying islands.
By the way the short sail gives you the possibility for good nature experiences and possibility to watch the animal life.
